HISTORY: THE LIBRARY AND THE ARCHIVES

The Library has its origin in the personal collection of Jose Ortega y Gasset donated by his heirs, to which some legacies from other institutions and personal libraries have been added.

The Library has three sections: collection of books, periodicals, and the record library. The collection of books has nowadays 45,000 volumes. New acquisitions are mainly oriented to satisfy the necessities of the programs in Linguistics, Contemporary History, Latinamerica, International Relations, Public Policy, European Economy, European Studies, and Cultural Management.

The collection of the Library is incorporated to the CIRBIC catalogue of the Library Network of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas.

One important section of the Library is formed by its collection of periodicals. Some of them, difficult to find nowadays, belonged to the library of Jose Ortega y Gasset. The present periodicals, around 150 titles, are mainly grouped in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities, and they come in most cases from Great Britain, Germany, Latinamerica, and the United States.

The record library contains records from seminars, lectures and other events held in the Instituto. At the present days this collection has more than 2,000 records.

THE ARCHIVES

The Archives aim to contribute to the research about Ortega. They contain written and photographic documentation proceeding from the collection of Jose Ortega y Gasset and families Ortega Munilla-Gasset and Spottorno Topete. All this documentation has been microfilmed and catalogued distinguishing the following kind of documents: manuscripts, letters, notes, and bibliography. The microfilmation has been sponsored by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress in Washington.

The Fundación José Ortega y Gasset also holds the Archives of José Luis Ruiz de Arana, Duque de Baena, which are very relevant for the study of our contemporary history. The Archives of the Residencia de Señoritas are also placed in the Fundación, appropiately inventoried and catalogued.

The collection of documents about Ortega, complementary to the archives, aims to be highly exhaustive and it is constantly enriched with informations and data about the actual diffusion of Ortega y Gasset´s work. An universal bibliography about Ortega is being elaborated, containing all the works by Ortega in its several editions as well as all the research works about the philosopher.

The Dirección General de Patrimonio Cultural from the Consejería de Educación y Cultura of the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid declared the Library and Archives of Jose Ortega y Gasset Bienes de Interes Cultural (Goods of Cultural Interest) by resolution of August 2nd 1995.
